The New Year's Eve debate, the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, political election campaigns - racist debates accompany many topics. But when does racism become an issue? What do we air on social media and what do we reproduce there? And how can media users reflect on their newsfeed in a way that is critical of racism?
In this two-part event*, we want to look at how criticism of racism and reporting can be brought together - online and offline.
*Participants can decide when registering whether they would like to take part in both or just one module of the event.
Module 1: Racism-critical stocktaking of German media coverage
17:00 to 18:00
Presentation of results from media monitoring projects of the National Discrimination and Racism Monitor (NaDiRa) at DeZIM & "BetterPost - Good Journalism on Social Media" by the New German Media Makers.
With Ouassima Laabich, Ella Schindler, Sünje Paasch-Colberg and Judith Höllmann
Module 2: How can we become better?
18:30 to 19:30
Three workshops for media makers, social media editors, community managers & media users:
a) Dear journalists, let's talk about racism
On what occasions is racism reported? What is the focus of the content - and what is consequently not addressed? What does this mean for the public understanding of racism? And what levers are there for incorporating racism-critical knowledge and thinking into journalistic processes?
With Saskia Hödl (editor), moderated by Ella Schindler
b) Share, like, post - and the journalistic claim?
What does racism-critical reporting on social media look like? How do platform algorithms and performance indicators influence journalistic work? How can a long, carefully researched article be adequately shortened so that it works on social networks? How do moderators deal with hate speech? And how do moderators and social media editors work together?
With Tarık Kemper (freelance author and editor), moderated by Shirley Inafa (NdM)
c) Reflect your news(feed) - and act
Where do I actually find information and what criteria do I use to compile my newsfeed? How do I contextualize information in media coverage and on social media independently? And how do I expose racist or discriminatory narratives in text, images or memes, fake news or clickbaiting? What if I discover hate in comment columns? What is a constructive, safe approach for me and for others?
With Renate Hillen (media educator), moderated by Elisabeth Kaneza (DeZIM)
