Lecture: Prof. Dr. Kristina Lepold is Junior Professor of Social Philosophy/Critical Theory at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. She co-edited the reader "Critical Philosophy of Race", which presents central texts from the US-American research field of the same name in German translation. Among other things, she is currently working on the question of what exactly is meant by structural racism.

Comment: Prof. Dr. Serhat Karakayali is Professor of Migration and Mobility at Leuphana University. At the Racism Monitor (NaDiRa), he is responsible for international networking and the "Machine Learning, Racism and Discrimination" research lab of Leuphana University and NaDiRa.

Her research interests include racism theory and criticism of racism in post-national socialist Germany, historical and contemporary discourses on migration, pedagogy critical of racism, gender theory, intersectionality and qualitative social research.

There are no races, but what about race? The philosophical discussion on the metaphysics of race.

"Human races" do not exist, that is a scientific fact. At the same time, characteristics such as a person's skin color are statistically significantly linked to opportunities and disadvantages in various areas of life - in the USA, but also in Germany.

Obviously, there are groups that share relevant social characteristics. And these characteristics are linked to traits that have traditionally played a central role in assigning people to different, supposed "races". There are wide-ranging discussions in philosophy about what these groups are, which are referred to as "races" in English and sometimes as "racialized groups" in German.

Prof. Dr. Kristina Lepold will give an insight into this discussion in her lecture, Prof. Dr. Serhat Karakayali will comment on her remarks.
