The project investigates racism and hate speech in social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. It asks whether and how algorithmic recommendation logics affect the form, visibility, popularity and dissemination of racist content.
Perceived prototypicality of different groups in German society
Using the example of anti-Muslim and anti-Black racism, the project examines how these mechanisms manifest themselves in the complex dynamics of racism, what perspective those affected by racism have on it, and what preconditions and consequences are associated with it.
Within the framework of the outlined research strand, the project focuses on the (officially) institutionalized possibilities that people affected by racism have to defend themselves against racism.
